July 11, 2024 | : Dr Shamsi Kiran

No one wants a tooth removed, but sometimes it’s the best solution for your oral and overall health. At Yarra Smiles, we provide gentle dental extractions at our Deakin dental clinic. We also offer several tooth replacement options to restore your smile.
So, if you’re wondering why you might need a tooth extraction, keep reading to learn more about it and what to expect from the procedure.
Why Is Tooth Removal Necessary?
There are several reasons tooth extraction may be appropriate to perform.
- Orthodontic treatment — If you need orthodontic treatment, we may need to remove one or more teeth. This allows for proper alignment before you begin wearing braces or clear aligners.
- Damage or decay — Damage caused by trauma or decay is generally repairable, however when the damage is too bad, extraction followed by replacement of the tooth may be a more predictable long-term treatment option.
- Infection risk — Infection of the inner most part of a tooth may require Root Canal Treatment to resolve it. If for any reason Root Canal Treatment is not a patient’s preference or is not a preferable treatment option for other reasons, extraction would be appropriate to prevent serious and potentially life-threatening consequences.
- Wisdom teeth — Impacted wisdom teeth can result in serious infection and damage to the adjacent teeth. To prevent such damage, extraction of the wisdom teeth is a commonly performed dental procedure.
The Extraction Procedure: What to Expect
When you arrive at our dental clinic for an extraction, here’s what you can expect:
- Assessment — A thorough history will be taken of the problem. An assessment of your tooth clinically and by taking radiographs will be performed. Detailed investigation of your current and past medical conditions, as well as medication will be performed to make sure the procedure can be carried out in the safest manner possible for you. There are two types of extraction: simple extraction and surgical extraction. A simple extraction does not require bone removal. A surgical extraction refers to an extraction that requires some amount of bone removal in order to extract the tooth safely.
- Anaesthesia — Next, we will numb the area around your tooth. Once adequate anaesthesia is achieved, no pain should be felt by you during the surgery. Feeling of pressure during the extraction, though uncomfortable for some patients, is very normal and no amount of additional anaesthesia will take that away. This is normal to feel during the extraction procedure.
- Extraction — For a simple extraction, we will gently loosen and remove your tooth from its socket. For a surgical extraction, we will make an incision to gain access to your tooth and may require tooth sectioning as well as bone removal before removing it.
- Stitches — If you require a surgical extraction, sutures will be placed to close the wound.
